Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal)

The Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal) applies to people working in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency to command and operate a commercial marine vessel up to 12 metres in length (that is not carrying passengers) within sheltered waters, with propulsion power that is unlimited for an outboard engine or up to 100kw for an inboard engine.
- OR -
As a tender or auxiliary vessel (that is not carrying passengers) within 3 nautical miles (nm) of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or within 5nm from point of departure, shore base or aquaculture lease.
This qualification is required to obtain an AMSA certificate of competency as a Coxswain Grade 2 NC as defined in the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D.
Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal)

This qualification applies to people working in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency to command and operate the engines of a vessel:
- <12 m in length
- with propulsion power that is unlimited for an outboard engine or <500 kW for an inboard engine

- as a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nautical miles (nm) of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Transmit and Receive Information by Marine Radio

This qualification will allow you to transmit and receive information by marine radio, including very high frequency (VHF) and high frequency (HF) radio. You will learn how to operate emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs), search and rescue radar transponders (SARTs), automatic identification system search and rescue transmitters (AIS-SARTs), AIS man overboard (AIS-MOB) devices and digital selective calling MOB (DSC-MOB) devices. The unit will also cover radio equipment and power supply maintenance and fault-finding procedures.
This unit applies to people working in the maritime industry in the capacity of:
- Master on commercial vessels < 80m in length within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ), or
- Chief mate or deck watchkeeper on a vessel < 80m in length within the EEZ.
Transmit and Receive Information by Marine VHF Radio within Australian Territorial Waters_FFS23

The Australian Waters Qualification (AWQ) is another name for the MARC059 Transmit and Receive Information by Marine VHF Radio within Australian Territorial Waters.
Under federal regulations, you need an operating certificate to use a VHF and HF radio. If you are a boater, you must have a VHF radio qualification. Knowing how to use a marine radio can save lives.
For Boaters operating a VHF station in Australian waters, this unit meets the requirements of the Radiocommunications (Maritime Ship Station - 27 MHz and VHF) Class Licence 2001.
It is a study unit in the Maritime Training Package which is developed by Australian Industry Standards and endorsed by the Department of Education, Skills and Employment.
To access the full features of your marine radio, it is required that the radio is registered and that you be issued with a Marine Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number. To obtain an MMSI you need to provide your Marine Radio licence number.

Our maritime training rooms are also located in the South Yard, opposite The Boat Works administration office and slipway at A-05 on the waterside of Hanger H.
