The MARSS00008 Shipboard Safety Skill Set is a nationally recognised skill set from the MAR Maritime Training Package. It reflects the work required by people who need to complete shipboard-safety units of competency required by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for particular maritime roles, training pathways or certification requirements.
The skill set develops practical capability to respond to common shipboard hazards and emergencies, including:
- Minimising fire risk and responding to fires on board a vessel.
- Applying maritime work health and safety procedures.
- Preparing for and responding to vessel abandonment.
- Using survival craft and associated survival equipment.
- Applying basic survival skills after abandoning a vessel.
MARSS00008 contains four shipboard-safety units and contributes to a range of qualifications in the MAR Maritime Training Package.
Completion of MARSS00008 does not by itself authorise a person to work in every role on a domestic commercial vessel and does not itself issue a General Purpose Hand, Coxswain, Master or Marine Engine Driver Certificate of Competency. The qualification or certification required depends on the person's duties, vessel, operating area and current AMSA requirements.

MARSS00008 may be suitable for people who need shipboard-safety competencies for maritime employment, further maritime study or an AMSA-related training pathway.
Potential Uses
|
Check Before Enrolling
|
A person seeking an AMSA General Purpose Hand Near Coastal Certificate of Competency must complete the applicable full Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal), as well as AMSA's current age, English-language, medical, sea-service and first-aid requirements. MARSS00008 by itself is not the complete GPH training requirement.
Entry and Pre-Enrolment
MARSS00008 Shipboard Safety Skill Set has no formal entry requirements listed on the National Register.
Before confirming enrolment, Paradigm Training Group (PTG) will review your training goals, relevant maritime experience and qualifications, language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills, technology access and any support needs. PTG will then advise whether the training, delivery arrangements and available support are suitable for you.
Practical participation and support
Students must participate in practical shipboard safety activities, including vessel-abandonment procedures, survival-at-sea activities, firefighting and emergency response. Please discuss any condition or support need that may affect safe participation with PTG before practical training begins.
Reasonable adjustments may be available where appropriate, provided they do not remove competency requirements, compromise assessment validity or safety, or override applicable regulatory requirements.
AMSA requirements
MARSS00008 provides shipboard safety training used within the Australian maritime regulatory framework and may contribute to maritime qualifications or certification pathways.
If you are undertaking this Skill Set to meet an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) requirement, review the current AMSA qualification and training requirements relevant to your intended certificate, role or operation before enrolling.
Completion of MARSS00008 does not by itself guarantee eligibility for, or the issue of, an AMSA Certificate of Competency or other regulatory approval. Any additional sea service, medical, first aid, radio, assessment or application requirements applicable to your intended pathway must be satisfied separately.
Unique Student Identifier (USI)
You must provide a valid USI before PTG can issue your Statement of Attainment, unless a lawful exemption applies.
PTG offers MARSS00008 through a blended delivery model combining online pre-learning, trainer-supported study, a face-to-face practical workshop and competency-based assessment.

Practical assessment
|
Students are provided up to six months to complete the required learning and assessment activities. The skill set may be completed earlier where the student completes the required activities and demonstrates competency sooner.
Online pre-learning and formative activities identified by PTG must be completed before the applicable face-to-face practical and assessment activities.
- Classroom-based safety training and assessment.
- Approved PTG training vessels.
- Firefighting simulation activities.
- Safety-at-sea and survival drills in an appropriate aquatic environment.
Where additional learning, practice or evidence is required, PTG may arrange further training or assessment opportunities in accordance with the student's needs and PTG policies. Additional attendance does not alter competency requirements and does not guarantee a successful outcome.
MARSS00008 contains safety-critical competencies. Students must actively participate in practical training and assessment relevant to the four units.
Firefighting and WHS
|
Survival and Abandonment
|
Attendance alone does not result in a competent outcome. Students must satisfactorily demonstrate all applicable knowledge and practical requirements for each of the four units.

Practical activities may also occur on approved training vessels or at suitable firefighting and aquatic training locations. PTG will provide confirmed attendance locations before the applicable activity.
Online Learning
|
Firefighting Activities
PTG supplies specialised firefighting PPE and training equipment required for the activity. |
Safety-at-Sea Activities
|
Vessel Activities
|
Personal clothing and personal items identified above are to be supplied by the student unless PTG advises otherwise. Specialised training equipment and resources required for practical delivery are supplied by PTG.
To complete MARSS00008, the student must successfully complete all four units of competency.
| MARF028 | Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel |
| MARF029 | Meet work health and safety requirements |
| MARF030 | Survive at sea using survival craft |
| MARF060 | Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment |
A student assessed as competent in all four units will receive nationally recognised AQF certification documentation for the skill set.
The National Register's suggested Statement of Attainment wording identifies MARSS00008 as a skill set from the MAR Maritime Training Package that meets some industry requirements for shipboard safety.
Completion of MARSS00008 results in a Statement of Attainment, not a Certificate I, II, III or IV qualification and not an AMSA Certificate of Competency.
The units contained in MARSS00008 appear in a range of MAR Maritime Training Package qualifications. Successfully completed identical units may therefore support Credit Transfer into further maritime study, subject to the packaging rules and current status of the receiving qualification.
| MAR10224 | Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal) |
| MAR10424 | Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal) |
| MAR20324 | Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) |
| MAR20424 | Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal) |
| MAR30824 | Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal) |
| MAR30924 | Certificate III in Maritime Operations - including the Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal specialisation |
Completion of MARSS00008 does not automatically complete all safety requirements of every qualification listed above. PTG must review the receiving qualification and the student's certification documentation to determine the Credit Transfer available.
| Credit Transfer
Credit Transfer may be available where valid AQF certification documentation or an authenticated USI transcript demonstrates successful completion of one or more identical or officially equivalent units. Prospective students should provide this evidence before enrolling so unnecessary duplicate training can be avoided. |
Recognition of Prior Learning
RPL may be considered where sufficient, valid, authentic and current evidence demonstrates all requirements of one or more units. PTG will advise the applicant about evidence and assessment requirements before proceeding. |
Credit Transfer or RPL within MARSS00008 does not itself establish eligibility for an AMSA Certificate of Competency. AMSA requirements apply separately.
