Build the practical knowledge and operational capability required to command and operate eligible commercial vessels up to 12 metres through a supported employment-based training pathway.

This nationally recognised qualification is available to eligible participants through the Queensland Government Career Start traineeship pathway and supports the training component of the AMSA Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal pathway.

  • Handle and operate vessels up to 12 metres.
  • Operate inboard and outboard propulsion systems.
  • Apply navigation, seamanship, safety and environmental procedures.
  • Complete practical fire, survival-at-sea and vessel-handling activities.

Enrolment period:
Up to 12 months*
*Subject to the traineeship contract. The training period may be extended in some circumstances.
Funding and payment information: Eligibility must be confirmed before enrolment is finalised. No more than 30% of the applicable co-contribution fee is payable upfront. The published deposits are $236.64 for the student contribution and $150.00 for the employer contribution. Remaining balances are payable after completion of the theory component and before booking the practical workshop. School-based trainees may have nil student and employer co-contribution fees, subject to eligibility.
Regulatory information: Completion of MAR20324 does not itself result in an AMSA Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency. Applicants must also meet AMSA's current sea-service, medical, first aid, marine-radio, practical-assessment and application requirements.
Optional AMPA: An AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment may be added for $500 where required. This fee is separate from the Career Start co-contribution fees and must be paid in full before the assessment.
