Course Details

The MAR10224 Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal) is a nationally recognised qualification for people entering the maritime industry and developing the skills required to work as a General Purpose Hand aboard domestic commercial vessels.

The qualification develops practical skills in deck work, engine-room assistance, routine vessel maintenance, working as part of a commercial-vessel crew, firefighting, work health and safety, vessel abandonment, survival at sea and first aid.

MAR10224 forms part of the pathway towards an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) General Purpose Hand Near Coastal Certificate of Competency.

Students who successfully complete all eight units of competency will receive the nationally recognised MAR10224 qualification and a Record of Results.

Successful completion of MAR10224 forms part of the requirements for an AMSA General Purpose Hand Near Coastal Certificate of Competency.

Once issued by AMSA, the General Purpose Hand Near Coastal certificate permits the holder to assist with specified deck and engine work under general supervision within the limits prescribed by Marine Order 505.

There are no formal entry requirements specified for MAR10224 on the National Register.

Before enrolment is confirmed, Paradigm Training Group will review whether the course, delivery arrangements and available support are suitable for the prospective student.

Reasonable adjustment may be available where appropriate. Adjustment cannot remove competency requirements, compromise assessment validity or safety, or override requirements imposed by the training product, AMSA or applicable legislation.

Students must provide a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) before nationally recognised certification can be issued, unless a lawful exemption applies.

MAR10224 is offered over a 12-month enrolment period through a blended model of online learning, trainer-supported study, practical training and competency-based assessment.

Students must complete required online learning and pre-learning activities before attending the practical workshop unless another arrangement has been approved by Paradigm Training Group.

• Deck and vessel-maintenance activities.
• Engine-room and machinery assistance activities.
• Working effectively as part of a vessel crew.
• Firefighting and emergency-response simulations.
• Survival-at-sea and vessel-abandonment activities.
• Work health and safety activities.
• First aid and CPR training and assessment.

Students requiring further training, skills practice or reassessment may attend another scheduled workshop within their enrolment period, subject to availability and PTG's assessment and reassessment policies.

Students must successfully complete all 8 core units of competency.

Students assessed as competent in all eight units will receive:

• The nationally recognised MAR10224 Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal).
• A Record of Results listing the units successfully achieved.

A student who completes only some units may be eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment for the units successfully completed.

Students assessed as Not Yet Competent will be advised of any further evidence, training or reassessment required.

Students may elect to complete the GPH AMPA because successfully completed AMPA tasks may provide credit towards relevant AMPA requirements if the student later progresses to another near coastal Certificate of Competency, subject to AMSA's requirements.

Where a student chooses to undertake the GPH AMPA, the assessment is conducted in accordance with AMSA requirements and PTG's approved arrangements.

After completing MAR10224, applicants must separately satisfy AMSA's current requirements before a General Purpose Hand Near Coastal Certificate of Competency can be issued.

Students should use AMSA's current website when confirming eligibility, obtaining forms, recording sea service or applying for a Certificate of Competency.

AMSA requirements, forms, application processes and fees may change. Students should rely on the current information published by AMSA when preparing an application.

After submitting a Certificate of Competency application to AMSA, an applicant may ask an approved RTO to consider issuing an interim Certificate of Competency.

An interim certificate may allow an eligible applicant to commence applicable work for up to 60 days while AMSA assesses the application.

• Evidence that the Certificate of Competency application has been submitted to AMSA.
• Copies of relevant supporting documentation.
• Evidence of payment of the AMSA application fee.

An $800.00 deposit is due on enrolment. The remaining $800.00 qualification balance is payable in accordance with the student's invoice, agreed payment schedule and enrolment agreement.

The optional $500.00 GPH AMPA fee is separate from the qualification fee and is payable before the AMPA where a student elects to undertake the assessment. The AMPA fee (if required) should be paid at time of enrolment.

Students are informed of all required payments, due dates, inclusions and other applicable costs before payment is required. PTG's payment arrangements are administered in accordance with applicable RTO prepaid-fee requirements.

Refunds, cancellations, withdrawals and transfers are managed in accordance with the Paradigm Training Group Student Handbook, applicable fee and refund policies and the student's enrolment agreement.

Credit transfer or RPL for qualification units does not replace AMSA's separate sea-service, medical, first-aid or Certificate of Competency application requirements. Applications should be discussed with PTG as early as possible.

Paradigm Training Group provides support according to the student's individual needs and the requirements of the qualification.

• Language, literacy, numeracy and digital support.
• Assistance accessing online learning.
• Additional trainer guidance.
• Reasonable adjustment where appropriate.
• Further training or assessment opportunities.
• Referral to an appropriate external support service where necessary.
