The MAR30824 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal) is a nationally recognised qualification for people working in maritime-engineering roles and seeking the training component required for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency.
The qualification develops practical skills in marine internal-combustion engines, propulsion plant, auxiliary systems, electrical systems, fuel systems, engine-room operations, deck machinery, hull maintenance, environmental work practices, firefighting, survival at sea, workplace safety and first aid.
To achieve MAR30824, the student must be assessed as competent in all 17 core units of competency. There are no elective units.
Completing MAR30824 does not itself issue an AMSA Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency. The qualification is one component of the AMSA certification pathway. Separate age, English-language, medical, sea-service, first-aid, AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment (AMPA) and application requirements apply.
Successful completion of MAR30824 forms part of the requirements for an AMSA Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency.
Once issued by AMSA, the certificate permits the holder to perform specified engineering duties within the propulsion-power limits prescribed by Marine Order 505.

Entry and Pre-Enrolment
MAR30824 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal) has no formal entry requirements listed on the National Register.
Before confirming enrolment, Paradigm Training Group (PTG) will review your training goals, relevant experience and qualifications, language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills, technology access and any support needs. PTG will then advise whether the course, delivery arrangements and available support are suitable for you.
Practical participation and support
Students must participate in practical maritime engineering activities, including marine-engine operation, servicing and maintenance, emergency response, firefighting, first aid, CPR and survival-at-sea activities. Please discuss any condition or support need that may affect safe participation with PTG before practical training begins.
Reasonable adjustments may be available where appropriate, provided they do not remove competency requirements, compromise assessment validity or safety, or override applicable regulatory requirements.
AMSA eligibility and application
If you intend to obtain an AMSA Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency, review AMSA's current eligibility and application requirements before enrolling. This will help you understand the separate sea service, medical, first aid, assessment, evidence and application requirements that apply.
Completing MAR30824 does not automatically result in an AMSA Certificate of Competency. You must separately meet AMSA's requirements, including qualifying engineering sea service, medical fitness, current first aid certification and successful completion of the AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment (AMPA), before submitting your application to AMSA.
Further information: Medical fitness, qualifying sea service and myAMSA applications.
Unique Student Identifier (USI)
You must provide a valid USI before PTG can issue your qualification or statement of attainment, unless a lawful exemption applies.
PTG offers this qualification through a blended delivery model combining online learning, trainer-supported study, face-to-face practical training and competency-based assessment. The enrolment period is up to 12 months, subject to the student's individual training and assessment requirements and any applicable Credit Transfer or Recognition of Prior Learning arrangements.

Practical competency assessment
|
Students undertake online learning, knowledge assessment, preparation, practical training and assessment throughout their enrolment. Successful completion requires competency in all 17 units.
- Marine-engine and propulsion-plant activities.
- Engine-room, auxiliary-system and fuel-system tasks.
- Electrical-system testing, operation and maintenance.
- Deck machinery and hull-maintenance activities.
- Firefighting and emergency-response simulations.
- Survival-at-sea and vessel-abandonment activities.
- Work health and safety and environmental activities.
- First aid and CPR training and assessment.
- Reading learner resources.
- Reviewing slideshows, diagrams and videos.
- Knowledge-development and formative activities.
- Trainer support through PTG's available communication channels.
Where additional learning, practice or evidence is required, PTG may arrange further training or assessment opportunities in accordance with the student's needs and PTG policies. Additional support does not alter competency requirements or guarantee a successful outcome.

A student assessed as competent in all 17 units will receive nationally recognised AQF certification documentation for:
A student who does not complete the full qualification but successfully completes one or more units may be eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment for units successfully completed, subject to the applicable certification requirements.
The MED2 AMPA is the final practical assessment required for a new Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency.
The AMPA is separate from achievement of the MAR30824 qualification. A student may complete the qualification without completing the AMPA.
| New PTG MAR30824 students
Students who require the MED2 AMPA with PTG may undertake relevant AMPA assessment activities as part of the scheduled practical training and assessment arrangements, subject to assessment readiness and PTG's approved AMPA arrangements. |
Applicants trained elsewhere
Applicants who completed the qualification with another RTO and wish to undertake the MED2 AMPA with PTG may be required to attend PTG practical training and assessment before the final assessment. PTG will confirm the required attendance after reviewing the applicant's training and evidence. |
| AMPA validity
The AMPA must be completed within the applicable AMSA assessment timeframe. Once completed, the signed AMPA cover page is valid for the AMSA application period specified by AMSA. |
AMPA fee
The MED2 AMPA fee is $500.00. Where the AMPA is required for the student's AMSA pathway, the fee must be paid at enrolment. |
After submitting a Certificate of Competency application to AMSA, an applicant may ask an approved RTO to consider issuing an Interim Certificate of Competency.
An interim certificate may allow an eligible applicant to commence applicable MED2 duties for up to 60 days while AMSA assesses the application.
- Evidence that the Certificate of Competency application has been submitted to AMSA.
- Copies of relevant supporting documentation.
