This entry-level qualification is required to gain an AMSA certificate of competency to work as a deck and/or engine room hand on a commercial vessel.

What Will You Learn?
  • Deck Work Mastery: Acquire the knowledge and hands-on skills to assist with deck operations on vessels up to 100 metres in length and 3000 Gross Tonnage (GT) within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This means operation or lookout tasks for any navigation, mooring, anchoring and cargo duties
  • Engine Room Operations: Develop the foundational knowledge needed to assist in the engine room of vessels with propulsion power up to 3000 kW within the EEZ.
Note: If you don’t or won’t be performing these deck or engine tasks on a domestic commercial vessel (including fishing vessels) you may not need a GPH certificate of competency.

Furthermore, should the need arise to abandon ship, you'll be trained in surviving at sea using survival craft, an indispensable skill set that combines practical know-how with survival strategies to enhance your resilience and readiness in the face of adversity.

Offered by registered training organisations (RTOs) and endorsed by the Department of Education, Skills and Employment, MARC059 adheres to the standards set by the Australian Industry Standards. Completion of this unit not only fulfills the requirements of the Radiocommunications Act 1992 and the Radiocommunications (Maritime Ship Station – 27 MHz and VHF) Class Licence 2001 but also signifies your capability to operate VHF marine radios within 12 nautical miles of the coast confidently and legally.
