Personal Watercraft Licence

Paradigm Training Group's one day Personal Watercraft (PWC) course is competency based and accredited under the BoatSafe program approved by Queensland Transport. Upon successful completion you will receive a Statement of Competency for presentation to your local Transport Authority. Upon application, they issue your Personal Watercraft Licence.

During the course you will receive both theory and practical instruction to enable you to become familiar and confident in the operation of your Jetski (PWC) in a variety of operational and manoeuvring situations.
 
The Personal Watercraft (PWC) course allows individuals to gain confidence and competence operating recreational PWC vessels in different scenarios.

This course is offered via a blended delivery model of face-to-face, online training and assessment.

Once enrolled, your personal watercraft course is valid for 6 months from the enrolment date.
 

02.1 Face-to-Face

The face-to-face component of this course is delivered in one day over a four hour workshop. During the workshop you will be required to complete the BoatSafe personal watercraft exam paper and practical scenarios in the following environments:
Online and written assessments
Classroom
On board Paradigm Training Group personal watercrafts (Jetskis).
Prior to commencement of the face-to-face component of the course, online pre-learning activities must be completed. Once the online activities have been completed, students will be issued with an electronic statement of competency showing successful completion. The statement of competency must be printed and presented to the course instructor in order to start the face-to-face exam and practical during the workshop.
 

02.2 Online

Online activities consist of:
Watching a short video
Reading the BoatSafe Handbook
Reviewing slidehows
Completing online assessment questions

02.3 Workshop

During the workshop you will be required to:
Present a copy of your statement of competency to demonstrate completion of the online component.
Present a copy of the medical fitness disclosure statement. (Click here).
Complete the Personal Watercraft Licence exam paper
Complete the Personal Watercraft Licence practical assessment
Have lots of fun!
You will need a computer or tablet with internet access for the online components of this program.
 

03.1 Learner Resources

Learner resources are provided in your resources tab within our student online platform once enrolled in this course. 

03.2 Vessel Handling

Students MUST wear appropriate clothing for both class and water activities. Enclosed footwear must be worn at all times while on training vessels.
In order to successfully complete this course and obtain a statement of competence to gain your personal watercraft licence, you must demonstrate competency in all knowledge and skill requirements.

If you are unable to demonstrate competence in any of your required activities or during the four hour workshop you will be invited to attend further workshops where you will be provided with support and further opportunities, for practice and to demonstrate the required competency/ s.
You must have a marine licence to operate a boat that has an engine power greater than 4.5kW. You don't need to carry your licence with you on the water, but you must have proof of identity with you. You can verify your licence online.

In Queensland, a boat (also known as a Queensland regulated ship) must only be used for recreational activities, or for school, surf lifesaving or community activities—not for business, trade or commerce. To operate a personal watercraft, you must have a recreational marine licence and a personal watercraft licence.

If you have a supervisor with a valid marine licence on board, you can operate a boat or personal watercraft without a licence. The licensed supervisor must be able to take immediate control in case of trouble.You can only operate a boat or personal watercraft that is towing a person—for example, someone water skiing or riding a tube—if you have a valid marine licence. Certain rules apply if you want to drive a hire boat—contact your local Maritime Safety Queensland ofice to find out more.
You can start operating as a personal watercraft licensed operator once you have presented your statement of competence to the Department of Transport and Main Road Queensland and have paid all required fees.
