Course Overview

The MAR20424 Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal) is a nationally recognised qualification for people working in, or entering, maritime-engineering roles.

The qualification develops practical skills in marine internal-combustion engines, propulsion and auxiliary systems, engine-room duties, electrical systems, deck machinery, hull maintenance, environmental work practices, firefighting, survival at sea, workplace safety and first aid.

MAR20424 forms part of the pathway towards an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency.

Students who successfully complete all 13 units of competency will receive the nationally recognised MAR20424 qualification and a Record of Results.

Important
The MAR20424 qualification is not an AMSA Certificate of Competency. Applicants must separately satisfy AMSA's current age, English-language, medical, sea-service, first-aid, AMPA and application requirements.
AMSA Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal Pathway

Successful completion of MAR20424 forms part of the requirements for an AMSA Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency.

Once issued by AMSA, the certificate permits the holder to perform specified engineering duties within the propulsion-power limits prescribed by Marine Order 505.

Chief Engineer Functions
  • Chief engineer on a vessel with an inboard engine under 500 kW propulsion power.
  • Chief engineer on a vessel with an outboard engine of any propulsion power.
Other Engineering Functions
  • Second engineer on a vessel with propulsion power under 750 kW.
  • Assist an engineer under general supervision.
  • Work in an engine room on a vessel with propulsion power under 3000 kW.

Certification Issued by PTG

Students assessed as competent in all 13 units will receive:

  • The nationally recognised MAR20424 Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal).

A student who completes only some units may receive a Statement of Attainment for the units successfully completed.

Students assessed as Not Yet Competent will be advised of any further evidence, training or reassessment required.

PTG certification is separate from the Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency issued by AMSA.
AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment (AMPA)

The MED3 AMPA is the final practical assessment required for a new Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency.

The AMPA is separate from achievement of the MAR20424 qualification. A student may complete the qualification without completing the AMPA.

Completion and validity

The AMPA must be completed within 12 months of the first assessed AMPA task. Once completed, the signed AMPA cover page is valid for 12 months for the AMSA application.

AMPA fee

The MED3 AMPA fee is $500.00. Where the AMPA is required for the student's AMSA pathway, the fee must be paid at enrolment.

Successful completion of the AMPA does not guarantee that AMSA will issue a Certificate of Competency.
AMSA Certification Pathway

After completing the qualification, students must separately meet AMSA's current requirements before a Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency can be issued.

1 Meet personal eligibility requirements
Be at least 16 years old on the certificate issue date, have sufficient English-language ability and meet the applicable medical-fitness requirements (AMSA Form 1850).
2 Complete qualifying sea service
With an AMSA task book: at least 20 days qualifying sea service.
Without an AMSA task book: at least 60 days qualifying sea service.

Submit the required qualification, sea-service, medical, first-aid, identity, photograph and AMPA evidence and pay the applicable AMSA application fee.
Application URL: myAMSA
Sea-service note: Sea service must satisfy AMSA's qualifying sea-service and evidence requirements. Time spent on a vessel is not automatically accepted as qualifying sea service. Vessel time undertaken on PTG vessels as part of practical training or assessment should not be relied upon as qualifying sea service unless AMSA confirms that it meets the applicable requirements.
Marine radio certificate
AMSA's current MED3 application requirements do not list an SROCP, LROCP or other marine-radio certificate as a requirement for initial issue.
