One rope, two kayaks, a jet ski and a little bit of patience led to the heroic rescue of a kangaroo fighting for life in a canal at Runaway Bay earlier this week. Our very own CEO Julianne and Director Andris Zalite were comfortably working at home (due to COVID-19 precautions) when they noticed the quickly tiring kangaroo “zig-zagging across the canal” trying to find a way out of the water.
Julianne was concerned when the kangaroo began swimming towards open water.

Andris and Julianne jumped into action alerting two passing kayakers to assist the poor animal to safety. Shortly after, Paul Dunn (off-duty firefighter) and his wife Rebecca joined the rescue team on their jet ski. By attaching a rope to the two kayaks and then to the jet ski, slowly and carefully the kangaroo was towed safely to shore. Later that afternoon Julianne and Andris reported that the kangaroo was spotted happily feeding on grass in a nearby paddock.

In recent weeks, the COVID-19 has resulted in social distancing and the trend of working from home. If it wasn’t for these circumstances these heroic people may not have been there to assist the kangaroo. With everything currently going on in the world, we can be grateful for these small mercies.🦘♥
