The training period may be extended in some circumstances.\n\n\n\nFunding and payment information: Eligibility must be confirmed before enrolment is finalised. No more than 30% of the applicable co-contribution fee is payable upfront. The published deposits are $236.64 for the student contribution and $150.00 for the employer contribution. Remaining balances are payable after completion of the theory component and before booking the practical workshop. School-based trainees may have nil student and employer co-contribution fees\, subject to eligibility.\n\nRegulatory information: Completion of MAR20324 does not itself result in an AMSA Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency. Applicants must also meet AMSA's current sea-service\, medical\, first aid\, marine-radio\, practical-assessment and application requirements.\n\nOptional AMPA: An AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment may be added for $500 where required. This fee is separate from the Career Start co-contribution fees and must be paid in full before the assessment.\n\n\nCourse Overview\n\n\nThis qualification applies to people working in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency to:\n\n1. Command\, and operate the engines\, of a vessel <12 m long:\n    (a) in inshore waters\, or in waters designated for a specific purpose by a State or Territory authority in which it permits holders of this certificate to operate\, subject to any conditions that it may impose; and\n    (b) with propulsion power:\n         (i) for an inboard engine — <500 kW; or\n         (ii) for an outboard engine — unlimited\n2. Command\, and operate the engines\, of the vessel <12 m long:\n    (a) as a tender within 3 n mile of the parent vessel     \n    (b) with propulsion power:\n         (i) for an inboard engine — <500 kW; or\n         (ii) for an outboard engine — unlimited\n3. Act as chief mate or deck watchkeeper on a vessel <24 m long in inshore waters\n4. Undertake the duties and perform the functions of a General Purpose Hand NC\, a Coxswain Grade 3 NC and Coxswain Grade 2 NC. \n\n\nCourse Delivery\n\n\nThis qualification is offered over a 12-month period through a blended delivery model of face-to-face and online training and assessment. The face-to-face component is delivered over a seven-day workshop\, including classroom training\, onboard training\, firefighting simulations\, and safety at sea drills. Prior to commencement of the face-to-face component of the course\, online pre-learning and formative assessment activities must be completed. You will have online support from trainers and assessors throughout the duration of the course.\n\nPlease note: If you are able to supply evidence of holding a current HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certificate you will only need to attend six of the seven days. You are welcome to attend more than one face-to-face workshop during the 12-month program if you would like extra learning or if the trainer and assessor has identified that you need extra time in order to gain competence. Extra workshops incur no further costs and are included in your original course fee/s.\n\nFace-to-Face Workshop\nThe face-to-face component of this course is delivered over a seven-day workshop. During the seven days you will complete training with formative and summative assessment activities in the following environments: \n\n\n	Classroom\n	On board vessels ranging from 5 to 18 metres\n	Fire fighting simulations\n	Safety at sea drills in sheltered waters\n\n\nOnline Activities\nThese consist of: \n\n\n	Multiple choice and other formative assessment questions\n	Reading learning materials\n	Reviewing slideshows and videos\n	Video\, email\, text and phone conversations with Trainers and Assessors\n\n\n\nCourse Resources\n\n\nYou will need a computer or tablet with internet access for the online components of this program.\n\nOther resources that you will require for workshop days include:  \n\n\n	Fire training: long pants\, long sleeved shirt and closed shoes MUST be worn. Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) will be provided by PTG - Eye protection\, gloves et cetera.\n	Safety at sea: swimwear and towel are required. You may consider bringing a spare change of clothes. Sunscreen MUST be worn for Safety at Sea units.\n	Vessel handling: Students MUST wear appropriate clothing and enclosed footwear at all times while on training vessels.\n\n\nThese resources are not included in the course fee and must be purchased or provided separately. \n\n\nQualification\n\n\nIn order to successfully complete this qualification and gain your Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal)\, you must demonstrate competency in all unit knowledge and skill requirements. If you are unable to demonstrate competency in any of your unit activities or during the seven-day face-to-face workshop\, you will be invited to attend further workshops where you will be provided with support and further opportunities for practice and to demonstrate the required competencies. \n\n\nQualification Pathways\n\n\nPathways from this qualification include: \n\n\n	MAR30924 Certificate III in Maritime Operations - Master up to 24 Metres Near Coastal\n	MAR30824 Certificate III in Maritime Operations - Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal.\n\n\n\nCredit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning\n\n\n\n	Credit Transfer: If you have completed any single or multiple units in this qualification and can provide evidence in the form of a certificate and transcript issued by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or educational body\, you may be eligible for credit transfer. You should consult with PTG for advice on this process.\n	Recognition of Prior Learning: RPL recognises your existing experience gained through life or work for which you may not have obtained a formal qualification. If you are able to supply valid\, sufficient\, current and authentic evidence of having the skills and knowledge required for any or all of the required units for this qualification\, you may be eligible for RPL and should consult with PTG for advice on this process.\n\n\n\nUnits of Competency\n\n\nThis qualification includes 13 units of competency covering first aid\, vessel operation\, safety\, and navigation. These units include:  \n\n\n	HLTAID011 Provide first aid\n	MARB027 Perform basic servicing and maintenance of main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems\n	MARC037 Operate inboard and outboard motors\n	MARC038 Operate main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems\n	MARF028 Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel\n	MARF029 Meet work health and safety requirements\n	MARF030 Survive at sea using survival craft\n	MARF060 Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment\n	MARH013 Plan and navigate a passage for a vessel up to 12 metres\n	MARI003 Comply with regulations to ensure safe operation of a vessel up to 12 metres\n	MARJ006 Follow environmental work practices\n	MARK007 Handle a vessel up to 12 metres\n	MARN008 Apply seamanship on a vessel up to 12 metres\n\n\n\nLicensing Overview\n\n\nThe Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal Certificate of Competence is issued by AMSA. Requirements include sea service\, practical assessment\, radio certificate\, first aid certificate\, eyesight test\, and medical fitness.\n\nIn addition to your successful completion of the MAR20324 - Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade I Near Coastal) with PTG\, to successfully gain your Coxswain Grade 1 License you will also need to: \n\n\n	Obtain qualifying sea service - 30 days qualifying sea service and a completed AMSA approved task book; OR 150 days qualifying sea service - on commercial or recreational vessels without an AMSA task book.\n	Complete an AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment (AMPA).\n	Short range operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) issued by ACMA (or higher qualification).\n	Complete a HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course and supply your certificate.\n	Complete Certificate of Competency Application\, AMSA form 426.\n	Complete a Certificate of Medical Fitness for a Domestic Marine Qualification\, AMSA document 1850.\n\nPeople seeking licensing certification should read the Marine Order 505 for licensing and sea service requirements.\n\nAMSA Mandated Practical Assessment (AMPA)\n\n\n\nThe purpose of the AMPA is to assess an individual competency against the performance requirements of a specific AMSA license outcome. The AMPA is conducted by Paradigm Training Group (PTG) in accordance with AMSA regulations to allow students to successfully complete their AMSA final assessment and gain their low complexity interim certificate of competency (Interim license) prior to submitting the required licensing evidence to AMSA for processing.\n\nHow do you Complete the AMPA?\nIf you are a new Paradigm learner enrolling into a maritime qualification and have selected the option to complete an AMPA\, you will have the opportunity to do so as part of your seven-day maritime training and assessment workshop. Please note that the AMPA is valid for 12 months. If you have not applied to AMSA for your license in that 12-month period\, you will be required to rebook another AMPA at an additional cost. \n \n\nFor more information: AMSA mandated practical assessment\n\n\n\nLow Complexity Interim Certificate of Competency (ICoC)\n\n\nThe ICoC is a 60-day interim license issued by PTG to seafarers who have successfully completed their licensing requirements. Please contact 1300 161 640 or email info@paradigmtraining.edu.au to book an appointment. \n\n\nGovernment-Funded Training (Queensland Career Start)\n\n\n What is Career Start? \nCareer Start provides individuals with the skills and support to start their career.  The program provides training to help individuals find a job and supports those already employed to move into more skilled roles or full-time employment\, including after completing an apprenticeship or traineeship. Career Start supports delivery of entry level training to students\, apprentices and trainees aligned with the skill outcomes required by industry.  Career Start offers either a general training pathway or employment-based apprenticeship or traineeship pathway. \n\nUnder Career Start\, an individual may access up to two subsidised training places through one of the following options:  \n\n\n	a general qualification at certificate III and an apprenticeship/traineeship\, noting that if the apprenticeship/ traineeship is done first\, the individual is no longer eligible to access a general qualification under Career Start; or \n	two apprenticeships/traineeships at either certificate II or III\, including school based apprenticeships or traineeships (SATs). \n\n\nIn addition\, under Career Start\, individuals may access one subsidised introductory-level skill set. \nAn individual cannot do two general pathway qualifications under Career Start. This means that operators are required to hold a relevant Australian maritime radio operator's certificate of proficiency or an equivalent overseas qualification.\n\nThe Australian Maritime College (AMC) acts as the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) delegate in providing marine radio certificate services under the Radcomm Act\, including the issue of Long Range Radio Operator’s Certificates of Proficiency (LROCPs). Operators who have attained a Statement of Attainment from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) for this unit can apply to the AMC for the issue of a LROCP without the need to sit a further examination.
